Entering the second trimester of pregnancy is usually a more comfortable phase for many mothers. The nausea and vomiting (morning sickness) common in the first trimester typically begins to subside, and body weight should start showing steady increases. On average, pregnant women are advised to gain around 0.5 kg per week during this trimester.

But what if your weight is not increasing or is actually dropping? Weight loss in pregnant women, particularly in the second trimester, can be a genuine concern that requires prompt attention. It is important to understand the causes and seek advice from your obstetrician.

Causes of Weight Loss in the Second Trimester

Several factors can contribute to this issue. Here are the most common causes:

Prolonged Morning Sickness: Although less common, some pregnant women may still experience severe nausea and vomiting in the second trimester, making it difficult to eat and ultimately leading to weight loss.

Insufficient Nutritional Intake: During the second trimester, your body requires approximately 340 additional calories per day. If you are not getting enough calories and nutrients, your weight may drop or struggle to increase.

Stress and Anxiety: Emotional pressure can negatively affect appetite and sleep quality, which in turn can cause weight loss.

Excessive Physical Activity: Exercise is beneficial during pregnancy, but overdoing it can burn more calories than you consume, resulting in weight loss.

Unbalanced Eating Patterns: The health of both mother and baby depends on a nutrient-rich diet. If you frequently skip meals or your food choices lack nutritional value, it can affect your weight.

Certain Medical Conditions: Some health conditions such as thyroid problems or digestive system disorders can also be behind unexplained weight loss.

Effective Tips to Manage Weight Loss

If you are facing this issue, do not panic. There are several steps you can take whilst being monitored by your doctor.

Eat Frequently in Small Portions: Instead of three large meals, try eating six times a day in small portions, roughly every two hours. This can help reduce nausea and ensure your body always has a steady supply of energy.

Choose High-Calorie, Nutrient-Dense Foods: Focus on foods that are packed with nutrients. Good choices include avocados, nuts, oily fish (such as salmon), and olive oil—all rich in calories, protein, and healthy fats.

Add Healthy Calories to Your Meals: You can easily boost your calorie intake by adding olive oil, cream cheese, or full-cream milk when preparing your food.

Manage Stress Effectively: Mental health is equally important. Set aside time for calming activities such as meditation, prenatal yoga, or any hobby that helps you manage stress.

Consult Your Doctor Promptly: This is the most important step. If your weight continues to drop or you have any other concerns, see your obstetrician immediately. They can help identify the actual cause and recommend the most appropriate and safe management plan.

Important Reminder

Any weight loss during the second trimester should be assessed by a doctor to ensure there are no serious underlying health issues. Ensuring adequate nutritional intake and managing stress is not only important for weight management, but also for your overall health and the development of your baby.
