Vaginal Discharge in Pregnancy: Normal or Dangerous? Warning Signs

• Tim Kelas Antenatal & Postnatal

Discharge is normal during pregnancy — rising oestrogen levels prompt your body to produce more mucus (leukorrhea) to protect the womb from bacteria. However, some types of discharge signal an infection that needs treatment. How do you tell the difference?

Normal Discharge

Normal discharge during pregnancy has these features:

  • Clear, milky white in colour.
  • No bad smell.
  • Not itchy.

This mucus acts as a natural defence — it stops bacteria from getting into the womb. As long as your discharge matches these features, there is nothing to worry about.

Warning Signs: Abnormal Discharge

Be alert if the discharge changes colour or comes with other symptoms:

  1. Clumpy Like Cottage Cheese: With itching — suggests a yeast infection.
  2. Yellow / Green: A sign of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV).
  3. Bloody / Grey: May signal an infection or a threat to the cervix.

If you have any of these signs, do not ignore them — an untreated infection can affect your pregnancy.

Complications If Left Untreated

Chronic Bacterial Vaginosis that is left untreated can weaken the amniotic membranes and trigger preterm birth. This is why early checks and prompt treatment matter so much during pregnancy.

When to See Your Doctor

See your doctor right away if your discharge is clumpy and itchy, yellow or green, or mixed with blood or grey in colour. Do not try to treat it yourself with creams without medical advice — the wrong treatment can make things worse. As your due date approaches, it is also important to learn how to tell the difference between amniotic fluid, the show and normal discharge. All findings from each antenatal visit are recorded in your pink book, so make sure you bring it to every check-up.
