Expressed Breast Milk (EBM) is like liquid gold — fragile and valuable. It needs to be stored and warmed properly to keep its nutritional quality and protect your baby from food poisoning.

How Long Milk Lasts at Each Storage Temperature (Rule of 4)

Each temperature level has its own shelf life:

  • Normal Room Temperature: Safe for up to 4 hours at its best (6 hours in a cool or air-conditioned room).
  • Main Body of the Fridge (chiller, 4°C): Safe to give for 3-5 days.
  • Standard Two-Door Freezer: Lasts a solid 3-6 months.
  • Deep Freezer (-20°C): Keeps its value for up to a year (12 months).

Use a “first in, first out” system when storing — use the oldest milk first so no stock sits too long and goes to waste.

Thawing Without Damaging the Milk

Take the frozen EBM blocks out in “first in, first out” order. Let them thaw naturally by moving them to the cold lower shelf of the fridge overnight. This slow thaw keeps the milk quality higher than rushing the process.

[WARNING] Never put milk in the microwave or boiling water! The heat destroys the vitamin C and immune agents in the liquid. Only warm the bottle by standing it in a jug of warm tap water.

Everyday Storage Tips

  • Label every bottle with the date and time it was expressed so it is easy to manage.
  • Put older stock at the front and newer stock at the back of the fridge.
  • Always wash your hands and make sure bottles and pump parts are clean before expressing.
